EVs centre stage at UK Drive Live Event 2025

By Bill McCarthy

The UK automotive market has welcomed another major Chinese car brand, Changan, which made its debut just weeks after Chery’s arrival with the Tiggo SUV. It unveiled its first UK model, the Deepal S07 saloon.

This significant introduction took centre stage at the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT)’s inaugural Drive Live event. Held at the Coombe Abbey Hotel in Warwickshire, the event successfully connected nearly 100 key media figures with the latest cars and technology from 12 manufacturers.

Electric vehicles on a charge

The showcase in Coventry was overwhelmingly dominated by electric vehicles (EVs), underlining the industry’s rapid transition. A key theme was the expansion of the EV market into new segments, highlighted by the debut of two new electric pick-up trucks.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, emphasised this shift at the event, stating: “The range of new vehicles on display here in Coventry highlights the variety of zero-emission options available to consumers.”

He also stressed the importance of such events for the UK market. He said: “These events demonstrate the cutting-edge technology and innovation now being manufactured.”

New Chinese Changan arrives

The most notable debut came from Changan, one of China’s largest automotive groups with over four decades of manufacturing experience. The brand announced the Deepal S07 as its first UK model, supported by a new network of 20 Changan UK dealerships. A flagship site will be located at Lookers Star City in Birmingham.

  • Ford Explorer: The brand’s all-electric Explorer SUV.
  • MINI Cooper: The new Cooper models, including the convertible, provided a break from the pure-EV focus.
  • Toyota Land Cruiser Commercial: The new commercial vehicle offering.
